Conférence : Saving the Dead: Tibetan Funerary Rituals in the Tradition of the Sarvadurgatipariśodhana Tantra

À propos de la conférence

In this talk I will discuss my new book Saving the Dead, which explores Tibetan funerary practices based on the Sarvadurgatipariśodhana Tantra (SDP). I will examine these practices' early history in Tibet before turning to the seminal works of the Sakya author Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen (1147–1216) and the diverse forms of agency—human, nonhuman, and material—articulated in his texts. I will also explore the polemical responses evoked by Drakpa Gyaltsen’s manuals from Bodong Paṇchen Choklé Namgyal (1375/6–1451) and Gorampa Sönam Sengé (1429–89), discussing key points of contention including methods for site preparation, visualization practices involving objects representing the deceased, and the relationship between tantric narrative and ritual enactment. Finally, I will examine the innovative contributions of the Sakya patriarch Ameshap Ngawang Kunga Sönam (1597–1659) and his efforts to integrate practices characteristic of highest yogatantra into the yogatantric rites of the SDP.
