This talk shares insights from the journey to replacing synthetic khatas and lungtasin the Himalaya and beyond with biodegradable ones. The project, “Biodegradable Blessings,” was born out of a collaboration between entrepreneur Ang Dolma Sherpa, religious scholars Amy Holmes-Tagchungdarpa and Kalzang Dorjee Bhutia, and anthropologist Pasang Yangjee Sherpa to address the environmental pollution from overconsumption of mass produced synthetic religious materials meant to bring spiritual merit. The speakers will highlight traditional methods and materials that were used widely to make sustainable khatas and lungtas for generations across the Himalayas. The talk ends with a discussion of mass production and overconsumption of affordable synthetic material.

À propos des conférencières : Ang Dolma Sherpa & Pasang Yangjee Sherpa (University of British Columbia)
Ang Dolma Sherpa is a social entrepreneur who won the top “ideator” award at Idea Studio Nepal 2019 for her concept of biodegradable khata, ceremonial scarves. The platform led her to initiate Utpala Craft in 2020, creating a shift from synthetic prayer flags and khata to biodegradable ones.
Pasang Yangjee Sherpa is a Sharwa anthropologist from Pharak (aka Mt. Everest region) in northeastern Nepal. She is an assistant professor of Lifeways in Indigenous Asia, jointly appointed in the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies and the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia, Canada.
