The first published presentations of the oral traditions of the Central Himalayan region, corresponding to today’s state of Uttarakhand in northern India, were by two scholars: the Irish colonial administrator E.T. Atkinson and the Russian Orientalist I.P. Minaev. Comparing their work from the 1870s and 1880s shows two contrasting attitudes toward rural Himalayan traditions, a difference that can be linked not only to their different positions with regard to empire, but to very different backgrounds and ideologies concerning the relationship of modern Europe to the rest of the world, ideologies that continue to weigh on scholarship today.

John Leavitt teaches in the linguistic anthropology section of the Department of Anthropology at the Université de Montréal. He has conducted field research in the Central Himalayan region of northern India and in Celtic-speaking regions of Western Europe.
